There are many myths surrounding the world of spas and what’s behind, “the closed door”. For some of us that are not familiar to this world, it can conjure up a terrifying experience having to strip down naked and be covered in mud, although that is just one example. So for those of you out there that are missing out on the real pleasures that await I would like to enlighten you to a few of the myths.
1. Lets start with the nakedness
1st and foremost you are never expected to lie on the treatment couch in no more than your birthday suit! If you are having a full body massage for example, you will be asked to remove your clothing garments, while the therapist steps outside your cabin to give you privacy. She will supply you with fresh, fluffy towels to cover yourself and quite often a blanket to keep you warm. Only removing the towel that covers the area she is working on, she will then replace the towel and move on to the next area. So it is all done in a most professional way to maintain one’s modesty and defuse any embarrassment to the customer. If this still feels uncomfortable to you then there are a number of treatments available to you that can be performed completely clothed. If unsure about anything remember the therapist is always there to answer any questions you may have.
2. Only lazy people go to spas
Absolute rubbish! I for one am by no means lazy, I will mountain trek as much as the next person, but given the opportunity to visit a spa, I’m there. Although the majority of spa facilities are deemed relaxing, they also offer the chance to improve our fitness and general wellbeing. With swimming still known to be one of the best all round exercises we can part take in a morning of vigorous lengths of the pool knowing the benefits it has for our body. With that in mind no need to feel guilty about an afternoon sitting in the spa or lying having a massage. Gyms are also one of the facilities that one comes to expect from many spa experiences, and pounding the treadmills soon get the heart rate up and burn those calories, so all in all not only lazy people go to spas! Some spas offer treatment programmes for weight loss specifically designed for those of us whom want to loose a few pounds and will normally incorporate a fitness plan around this, so you could actually end up leaving a few pounds lighter.
3. Only women go to spas
Perhaps this was the case 30years ago but gone are the days when this was , “the norm”. On any given day if you were to visit a spa, not only would you see women come and go, but more and more you would see a steady flow of the male population. This is a fast increasing pattern change that the millennium has brought about. Rightly so, men have now discovered the benefits that spa treatments can bring to their wellbeing. As well as visiting spas on their own, they are also realising what an enjoyable experience it can be with your partner, and in some cases even with their friends. Whereas groups of girls have enjoyed sharing hen party spa days/weekends, men are catching up and are now choosing this option instead of drunken nights out! It is no longer looked upon as being a camp pastime but part of everyday grooming.
4. Treatments are all just gimmicks
There will always be sceptics in this industry, just like every other, those who do not believe that any lotions or potions work. Yes there is a large part of our make up in our genetics themselves but also in the way we look after and care for what we have. If you are given a beautiful, healthy plant and you do not give it water and expose it to too much sunlight/or not enough, then it will die. The same principal exists for our skin, by feeding it with the correct skincare we can maintain a healthy glow to our complexions. Anti-Aging products contain ingredients such as vitamins and minerals, which our skin naturally has when we are young but as we grow older it looses these. So by using anti-aging creams etc they can replace the natural components to maintain a healthy, younger looking skin.
I hope I have managed to dispel a few of the myths surrounding spas and entice you into trying the experience for yourself.
